The Fairytale Didn't Quite Happen
Centuries of history. A beautiful setting. An experience that fell short.
We booked a Highland castle for our 19th wedding anniversary expecting romance, character and a little Scottish magic. The history delivered. Sadly, much of the hotel experience didn't.

Because Sleeping in a Scottish Castle Should Be Special
There is undeniable romance in the idea.
A historic Highland castle. A four-poster bedroom. An anniversary away together. Ancient staircases, period interiors and stories embedded in the walls.
That was precisely what drew us to Tulloch Castle.
We weren't looking for contemporary, polished luxury. We wanted character. We wanted history. We wanted somewhere that felt different.
And the building certainly has all the ingredients.
Unfortunately, having character and delivering a memorable hotel experience aren't quite the same thing.

Our Honest Take
We desperately wanted to love this one. We had booked what was advertised as the top four-poster room, but when we arrived the reality didn't match the romantic image we'd had in mind.
The four-poster itself was incomplete. The side panels and drapes were missing, leaving the curtain hooks behind as a rather unfortunate reminder of what should have been there.
The room also felt dated and was uncomfortably warm, with the heating seemingly running continuously during our stay. And yet, when we looked out of the window? Beautiful.
The view from our room was idyllic and easily one of the most memorable parts of the stay.
That's what made Tulloch Castle frustrating. The history, architecture and setting provide such strong foundations, but the finer details of our experience simply didn't live up to them.

Things to consider
The rooms may not match the romance of the building.
Our four-poster room felt tired and the bed itself was incomplete.
Our room was extremely warm.
The heating being on continuously made it uncomfortable during our stay.
Dining disappointed us.
Our dinner, bed and breakfast package offered limited choices and we found the food noticeably over-seasoned.
Watch for supplements.
We weren't made aware beforehand that some menu choices attracted additional charges.
Service was inconsistent.
Some members of staff were genuinely excellent; unfortunately, our reception experience was very different.
Historic shouldn't mean neglected.
Some features and areas would, in our view, benefit from greater attention, cleaning and refurbishment.

Our Final Verdict
Historic alone couldn't save the stay!
Tulloch Castle should have been exactly our kind of place. It's historic, characterful, wonderfully atmospheric on paper and surrounded by the beauty of the Scottish Highlands. But Boutique Seekers isn't about reviewing buildings from the outside.
It's about what actually happens when you check in.
For us, the tired room, incomplete four-poster bed, uncomfortable temperature, disappointing dinner and inconsistent service meant the experience never matched the romance of the castle itself. There were bright spots — particularly the view and two members of the bar and restaurant team who couldn't have been more welcoming — but they weren't enough to change the overall experience.
The setting promised a fairytale. Our stay simply didn't deliver one.
Would we Return?
No — not as things stood during our visit.
We'd happily return to this part of the Highlands. We'd even be interested to see Tulloch Castle again if substantial improvements were made, because there is so much potential within those walls. But based purely on the stay we experienced? We'd choose somewhere else next time.
