Nestled within the beautifully restored Whitbread Brewery in the heart of London's historic Barbican district, Montcalm London City at The Brewery combines Victorian architecture with contemporary luxury. During our theatre break in the capital, we experienced both the hotel's undeniable charm and a few areas where it didn't quite meet our expectations.

Why stay here?
London has no shortage of luxury hotels, but few offer quite the same sense of history as Montcalm London City at The Brewery. Built within the former Whitbread Brewery, this five-star property blends original Victorian features with stylish modern interiors, creating a hotel that immediately feels different from many of London's corporate offerings.
Its location, just a short walk from the Barbican Centre, Farringdon and Liverpool Street, makes it an excellent base for both leisure and business travellers.
As always, Boutique Seekers booked this stay to experience the hotel exactly as any guest would, allowing us to share an honest and independent review.

Our Honest Take
Montcalm London City at The Brewery is a hotel we genuinely wanted to love.
Its beautiful historic setting, welcoming atmosphere and excellent location provide everything needed for a memorable London stay.
Unfortunately, the room maintenance issues we encountered prevented the experience from fully reflecting its five-star status. Whilst none were serious enough to spoil our trip, collectively they detracted from what should have been an exceptional experience.
With some investment in refurbishing guest rooms and a little more flexibility in guest service, this hotel has every opportunity to become one of London's standout boutique-style luxury hotels once again.

Things to consider
Some bedrooms are beginning to show signs of wear.
Check the timings for complimentary welcome drinks if you have evening plans.
The air conditioning may not cool rooms as much as some guests would prefer.
Nearby parking is available but can be expensive, as with most central London hotels.
The Barbican location is ideal for exploring both the City and London's West End.

Would we return
This was perhaps the hardest part of our review.
We absolutely loved the building, the location and the character of the hotel.
However, based on our own experience, we wouldn't choose to return until the guest rooms have been refreshed and the maintenance issues addressed.
That said, we'd happily recommend keeping an eye on future refurbishments because the hotel has enormous potential.
